Description of Event

As part of the Mid-Summer Flotilla, the Knickerbocker Sailing Assoc. will be sponsoring its 3rd Rainbow Rally on Saturday, August 4th. The Rainbow Rally is designed to be an easy sailing event and not so much of a competition. This year’s Rally will be held in one of the Northeast’s great sailing areas: Gardiner’s Bay, east of Shelter Island.

For those unfamiliar with the Rainbow Rally, it was created as a fun event for the K.S.A. captains and crews. It uses the pursuit format which has been used successfully for racing mega yachts (100+ feet!) and by cruising clubs worldwide. For sailing yachts that size and captains who aren’t as comfortable in close company to other moving boats, safety on the starting line, and the course itself, is of the utmost importance. With similar goals in mind, a pursuit type of event has worked well for the K.S.A. captains, their boats and their crews.

The crew members weren’t forgotten in the planning of the Rainbow Rally. A captain can have as many crew members on his boat as he feels are safe. That means a captain can invite other club members, family or friends in for the days sailing event.

The rules for the Rainbow Rally are pretty simple: Start at your assigned time and sail the prescribed course as quickly and safely as possible. The course will be about 10 to 15 miles in length with the Finish Line just outside of Coecles Harbor. Winners will be determined based on a boat’s PHRF rating and the time it takes to sail the course. There’s no entry fee for the Rally, but preregistration will be required so the Race Committee can get everyone’s boat into the program.

Keep an eye out on the KSA website for more details and feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
